Kes and the Two Fingered Salute

A week has passed since my last blog, that went quickly! Mainly because I have to BLOODY MOVE HOUSE. AGAIN. Anyway, on with goodness.

Website of the week

http://www.cracked.com/

Cracked

Quite simply a brilliant website. Always good for funny videos, interesting lists and the down right absurd. Check it out if you haven’t already! I personally recommend anything by Michael Swaim, or the “Agents of Cracked” series. One of Michael Swaim’s is below.

Song of the week

David Ford

David Ford - Go to hell

I adore this song. Its amazing. What is even more amazing than the album version is this:

He performs the entire song using loops and various kitchen utensils/instruments in the studio. Its breathtaking. Check it out.

Youtube video of the week

Foghorn Leghorn in “A Fractured Leghorn”

Daryl Wickham and Chris Raby brought back fond memories of Foghorn leghorn this week so I managed to find this old classic. I had a VHS with it on as a kid and this cartoon was always my favourite.

News story of the week

Bears

Bears “Guard” Cannabis Field

It seems some guys had a large cannabis field going in Canada, so to protect it they used dog food to lure some bears to keep the police at bay. That unfortunately didn’t work, and the police arrived to find some very mild mannered bears, who sat and watched while the field was destroyed and the culprits were arrested.

Movie of the week

Observe and Report (2009)

Observe and Report

This one slipped under the radar some how and a friend at work told me about it. Its classic Seth Rogen with some brilliant co-stars. It follows a mentally unsound head of mall security on his quest to find a flasher who has been invading the mall car park. Ray Liotta plays a cop who is investigating the case who takes a mutual dislike to Rogen’s character. Well worth a watch, here’s the trailer:

TV show of the week

The Armstrong and Miller Show

Armstrong and Miller

Another sketch show by two very funny men. Its on BBC Iplayer, I thoroughly recommend you check it out! Here’s one of the sketches.

Game of the week

Carnivores (PS3)

Carnivores

This is one of the games in the PS3 “Minis” series and is a steal at £2.49. If anyone has ever played the Cabella series, or any other hunting game then it follows the same principal, only you hunt dinosaurs instead. Its designed to run on the PSP, so the graphics aren’t stunning but its strangely addictive. Its available on the PS3, PSP, Ipad and Iphone, so if you have any of those things, give it a try!

Thing I learned of the week

The origins of the 2 Fingered salute:

Kes - Wildly Inappropriate...

I always thought that it was wildly inappropriate for the cover of the Kes VHS/DVD to feature a boy essentially swearing at anyone looking. Thanks to a young Donald Cox however, I now realise there is nothing offensive about it at all.

Apparently it originates from English Archers back in the day when we were battling the French. England was renowned for its archers, we were the best in the world. For that reason, whenever the French captured one of our archers, they would cut off the index and middle finger of the hand they use to draw back the bow (or the “Bow fingers”).

This led to English archers mocking the French during battle by showing them that they still had their bow fingers, presumably just before sending a rain of wooden death sticks their way.

So, next time you give someone the two fingered salute, be aware that all you are telling them is “HEY! I have 2 fingers!”. Not very insulting at all. It also clears up why the young man from Kes is performing the hand gesture on the DVD cover. He is saying “Hey! I have a fucking falcon, AND HE STILL HASN’T HAD MY FINGERS OFF!”.

Interesting side note, showing the middle finger is believed to be of Roman origin, to mock another man’s Phallus. Therefore, if you have ever shown the middle finger to a lady 1) you are terribly vulgar and 2) you are mocking the size of their penis.
