Fingers and Holes

I was talking to a girl at work today, and she said she needed to “Pull her finger out”. I never really got that expression, I understand what it means, but not where it came from. I looked it up and apparently it was an expression used in World War 2 by the RAF.

“Pull your fingers out chaps, officers approaching.”

Apparently it refers to courting couples. I think we all know where their fingers are implied to have been.

The problem I have is that the expression means “Get working”.

If someone has had their finger in someone that last thing I want them to do is pull it out and start working quickly.

I propose from this day the expression is changed from “I need to pull my finger out” to “I need to wash my finger thoroughly, then get back to work.”
